Google’s AI Mode reached Australian users, giving searchers a full conversational answer instead of a list of links.
Google AI Mode rollout to Australia
AI is changing how Australians shortlist who to buy from
A buyer used to search, open six tabs and compare. Now many ask one detailed question and read a single answer. That answer usually names a handful of businesses and explains why.
If your business is in that answer, you start the conversation already trusted. If it is not, the buyer may never see your website, however well it ranks. The shortlist has been made before they reach Google’s blue links.
This is why AI SEO matters now. The goal is to be one of the sources AI engines rely on when they answer questions in your category, in the words your customers actually use.

Ranking first on Google is no longer the whole picture
For years, SEO had one scoreboard: position one. Today that position can sit under an AI Overview that quotes a competitor, beside a Reddit thread and a row of short videos. Here is how the page has changed.
A typical results page, a few years ago
Sponsored ads
Map pack for local searches
Organic result one: your page
Nine more blue links
A typical results page now
Sponsored ads and shopping
AI Overview that answers the question and cites a few sources
If you are not cited here, many readers stop before scrolling
People also ask, discussions and forums, short videos
Map pack for local searches
Organic result one: your page
And that is only Google. ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude answer the same questions with no results page at all. Visibility now means being named inside the answer, wherever the question is asked.
Rankings still matter, because AI tools lean on pages that already rank and get crawled often. But a ranking report on its own no longer tells you whether buyers are hearing your name. That gap is what our SEO services and AI SEO work close together.
How AI SEO works
An AI tool builds its answer from two places. What it already learned during training, and what it looks up on the web at the moment the question is asked. AI SEO works on both.
Your brand's footprint across the web
Large language models learn from huge amounts of public text. If your business is described clearly and consistently in many trusted places, the model is more likely to know who you are and what you do.
- Mentions in news, industry and local media
- Reviews and ratings on sites people trust
- Directories, associations and business registers
- Forum and community discussions
Moves slowly. Changes show up as models are retrained, over months.
The pages it can find and quote today
For most commercial questions, AI search tools run live searches, read the top pages and pull short passages into the answer. Your pages need to be crawlable, easy to extract from and trusted.
- Open access for AI and search crawlers
- Pages that answer the question in the first lines
- Clear facts: prices, locations, specs, dates
- Schema that matches what is on the page
Moves faster. Improvements can show within weeks of a page being recrawled.
The answer your customer reads
Both inputs decide one of three outcomes for your business.
| AI search tool | Where it finds sources | What moves the needle |
|---|---|---|
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode | Google's own index. Google says a page only needs to be indexed and eligible for a snippet, with no extra technical steps. | Strong organic foundations, answer-first passages, and coverage of the related sub-questions Google fans out to. |
| ChatGPT search | Its own crawler (OAI-SearchBot) plus third-party search partners, with Bing the best known. | Crawler access, Bing indexing, and consistent brand information across sites ChatGPT already trusts. |
| Perplexity | Live web search and its own crawler (PerplexityBot). Every answer shows its sources. | Fresh, specific pages with clear headings and facts that are easy to lift into a short answer. |
| Gemini | Grounded in Google Search, plus what the model learned in training. | Everything that helps in Google, plus a well-defined entity in Google's Knowledge Graph. |
| Microsoft Copilot | Bing's index. | Bing Webmaster Tools, IndexNow for fast updates, and clean technical SEO. |
| Claude | Web search when it is switched on, plus training data. | Access for Anthropic's crawlers and plenty of independent sources that say the same thing about you. |
AI SEO, GEO, AEO and LLM SEO: four names for one job
The industry has not settled on one label, so you will hear all four. They overlap almost completely. Here is what each one usually means, and where it shows up.
AI SEO
AI search optimisation
The umbrella term. Improving how your business appears in any AI-generated answer, from Google’s AI Overviews to ChatGPT, while keeping your normal rankings strong.
Every AI search surface, plus classic Google results.
GEO
Generative engine optimisation
Getting your pages and brand cited when an AI tool writes a longer answer by combining several sources. The focus is on being quoted and linked as a source.
AI Overviews, AI Mode, Perplexity, ChatGPT search.
AEO
Answer engine optimisation
Structuring content so a system can lift one clear answer to one clear question. It grew out of featured snippets and voice search, and it now feeds AI answers too.
Featured snippets, People also ask, voice assistants, AI answers.
LLM SEO
Large language model optimisation
Shaping what the models themselves know about you, through consistent entity information and third-party mentions, so you get named even when the tool does not search.
ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini answers without live search.
We run all four as one programme with one set of reports. If an agency quotes them as separate retainers, it is fair to ask what you would be paying for twice.
What we do to get your business cited by AI
Every engagement covers the same ground, weighted to where your gaps are. Nothing here is a trick or a special tag. It is careful work on the signals AI tools already use to decide who to trust.
AI visibility audit and prompt baseline
We build a set of real questions your buyers ask, from broad category prompts to specific comparisons, and run them across ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Google. You see where you are named, where competitors are named instead, and what the AI gets wrong about you.
- Mention rate
- Citations
- Competitor share
- Accuracy
Prompt and fan-out research
AI tools split one question into several smaller searches. We map those hidden sub-questions so your content answers the whole chain, not only the headline keyword.
Access for AI crawlers
We check robots.txt, firewall and CDN rules for GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and ClaudeBot, fix content hidden behind scripts, and set up Bing Webmaster Tools and IndexNow.
Answer-first pages
We rewrite key service and product pages so the direct answer comes first, followed by proof. Short passages, clear headings and tables that an AI tool can quote cleanly. This is the heart of GEO and AEO.
Entity and schema work
Organization, Service, Product, Person and FAQ schema that matches the visible page, plus one consistent description of who you are across every profile.
Off-site authority and digital PR
AI tools cross-check you against other sources. We earn mentions in Australian media, industry sites, comparison articles and review platforms, and fix outdated or wrong information about you.
Local AI visibility
For businesses that serve an area, AI answers lean on Google Business Profile, reviews and consistent name, address and phone details. We tidy all of it and target the “near me” and suburb-level prompts your customers use, so you show up when AI recommends local providers.
- Google Business Profile
- Reviews
- Local citations
- Suburb pages
Writing pages AI can quote
Most service pages are written to sound impressive, not to answer anything. AI tools skip vague copy and quote the page that states the facts. Here is the kind of rewrite we do, using a made-up accounting firm.
“Our award-winning team delivers tailored accounting solutions for businesses of all sizes, helping you achieve your financial goals with confidence.”
Nothing here can be quoted as an answer. No service, no location, no audience, no detail.
“We do bookkeeping, BAS and tax returns for trade businesses in Western Sydney with 1 to 20 staff. Most clients are on Xero, and BAS is lodged within 10 business days of quarter end.”
Specific service, place, audience, software and timeframe. An AI tool can match this to a real question and cite it.
- Answer first. The opening line of each section answers its heading.
- One idea per passage. Short blocks that still make sense on their own.
- Real specifics. Prices, suburbs, turnaround times, standards, names.
- Tables for comparisons. Easy for people to scan and for AI to lift.
- Visible authors and dates. Who wrote it, their credentials, when it was updated.
- Claims you can back up. Especially under Australian Consumer Law and AHPRA rules.
LLM SEO: the places AI checks before it names you
Language models trust what many independent sources agree on. When your details match across the sites below, the model can describe you with confidence. When they conflict, it hedges or recommends someone else.
Your website
The source of truth for services, locations, team and proof.
Google Business Profile
Categories, services, hours, photos and reviews for local answers.
ABN and business registers
Legal name and trading names that match how you present yourself.
Review platforms
Google reviews, ProductReview.com.au and your industry’s own sites.
Your business
One name, one description, the same facts everywhere.
Australian media and podcasts
Trade press, local news and interviews that mention you by name.
Forums and communities
Reddit, Whirlpool and industry groups, where buyers compare notes.
Directories and associations
Industry bodies, chambers of commerce and trusted listings.
LinkedIn, YouTube and Wikidata
Company and founder profiles, videos, and a Wikidata entry where you qualify.
How an AI SEO engagement runs
You see findings in the first fortnight and changes on your site within the first month. Brand questions tend to move first. Broad category questions take longer, because they depend on authority built across the web.
Audit and baseline
Prompt set agreed, first test run across every AI tool, technical and entity audit, and a written list of priorities.
Fix the foundations
Crawler access, indexing, schema and entity clean-up. Your most important pages rewritten answer-first.
Build authority
New content for the questions you are missing, digital PR, reviews and directory work to earn third-party mentions.
Test and expand
Monthly re-runs of every prompt, new prompts added as you grow, and effort shifted to what is moving enquiries.
What changes from traditional SEO, and what stays the same
AI SEO is built on SEO, not bolted beside it. The foundations carry over. What changes is the unit you are competing for and how you measure it.
| Traditional SEO | AI SEO | |
|---|---|---|
| What you win | A position in a list of links | A mention or citation inside the answer itself |
| How people search | Short keywords, often two to four words | Long questions with context, plus follow-ups |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, technical health, content quality | All of those, plus consistent entity details, third-party agreement and passages that can be quoted |
| Content shape | Comprehensive pages built around a keyword | Answer-first sections, clear facts, tables and named experts |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results pages | AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Claude |
| How it is measured | Rankings, clicks and organic sessions | Mention rate, citations, share of voice, AI referrals and leads |
What stays exactly the same
A fast, crawlable site, helpful content written by people who know the subject, and a reputation other sites vouch for. Google has said there are no special requirements for its AI features beyond good SEO practice, which is why we never treat AI SEO as a replacement for the basics.
If your site has technical problems or thin content, we fix those first. AI tools will not cite a page they cannot read or do not trust.
What we report on, and what we will not pretend to measure
AI visibility is newer and messier to track than rankings. We would rather give you honest numbers with clear limits than a single score that hides how it was made.
- Mention rate for each prompt, on each AI tool, tracked month on month
- Citations, including which of your pages is being linked
- Share of voice against the competitors named alongside you
- Accuracy and tone of what AI says about your business
- AI referral traffic in GA4 from ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot
- Enquiries and sales from those visits, plus branded search trends
The honest limits
AI answers change from one run to the next, so we test each prompt several times and report the pattern, not a lucky screenshot.
Google Search Console blends AI Overview clicks into its normal web data, so we read it alongside other signals rather than on its own.
Many buyers read an AI answer and then search your name or call you directly. We watch branded search and direct enquiries to catch that.
No one controls what an AI tool says. Anyone who guarantees a placement is guessing.
Is AI SEO worth the investment for your business?
For many Australian businesses, yes. For some, not yet. The deciding question is simple: are your buyers asking AI for advice before they contact anyone?
It usually pays off when
- Buyers compare several providers before they enquire
- Your service is considered, expensive or trust-based
- Competitors are already being named in AI answers
- You rank well on Google but enquiries have softened
- AI tools describe your business wrongly, or not at all
Hold off for now if
- Your website has serious technical or content gaps
- Most sales come from walk-ins or one-off impulse buys
- You cannot yet track leads from your website
- You need results within weeks for a short campaign
Try this test today
Open ChatGPT or Perplexity and ask the question a new customer would ask, including your suburb or city. Note which businesses are named and why. Ask Gemini the same thing. If competitors keep appearing and you do not, you have found the gap. Our free check does this properly, across many prompts and every major AI tool, and shows you what to fix first.
Where AI answers already shape the shortlist
Some industries feel the change sooner, usually where buyers research carefully before they pick up the phone.
Professional services
Accountants, lawyers and consultants, where AI is asked to compare firms by specialty and suburb.
Health and allied health
Clinics and practitioners, with every claim written to suit AHPRA and TGA advertising rules.
Trades and home services
Urgent and local questions where reviews and Google Business Profile carry a lot of weight.
Ecommerce and retail
Product comparisons, where clean product data and structured pages help AI shopping answers.
B2B and SaaS
Long research cycles where AI is used to build vendor shortlists before sales ever hears from a buyer.
Finance and insurance
Comparison-heavy categories where accurate, compliant information and trusted third-party coverage matter most.

Frequently Asked Questions
AI SEO is the work of making your business easy for AI search tools to find, understand, trust and cite. It covers Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot and Claude. It builds on normal SEO, then adds answer-first content, consistent brand information across the web and tracking of what AI tools say about you.
AI tools answer from two sources: what the model learned in training and what it finds with a live web search. We improve both. On your site we fix crawler access, rewrite key pages so they answer questions directly and add accurate schema. Off your site we build consistent mentions, reviews and coverage that AI tools use to decide who is credible.
Regular SEO competes for a position in a list of links. AI SEO competes for a mention or citation inside the answer. The foundations are the same, but AI SEO puts more weight on questions asked in full sentences, extractable passages, entity consistency and third-party agreement, and it is measured by mentions and citations as well as rankings.
It is worth it when your buyers research and compare before they enquire, which covers most professional services, health, trades, B2B and considered purchases. It is less urgent if your site still has basic SEO problems or most sales are walk-in. Our free check shows whether AI tools already name your competitors for your key questions.
They overlap heavily. GEO focuses on being cited in longer AI answers built from several sources. AEO focuses on giving one clear answer to one clear question, the way featured snippets work. LLM SEO focuses on what the models already know about your brand. We run all three as a single AI SEO programme.
Make sure ChatGPT's crawler can reach your site and that you are indexed in Bing. Write pages that state what you do, where and for whom in plain facts. Then build consistent mentions on sites ChatGPT already trusts, such as reviews, industry directories, media coverage and forums. Mentions tend to follow once several independent sources agree about you.
Questions that include your brand name can improve within a few weeks of your pages being recrawled. Broader category questions, like the best provider in your city, usually take three to six months, because they depend on authority and mentions built across other sites. We report progress on both from the first month.
No, and you should be wary of anyone who does. Google decides which sources an AI Overview cites, and the answer changes from search to search. What we can do is remove the reasons you are being left out and track your citation rate across a fixed set of questions every month.
Usually not, if you want to be recommended. GPTBot collects training data, while OAI-SearchBot powers ChatGPT search, so they can be treated separately. Google-Extended controls Gemini's use of your content but does not affect AI Overviews. We review your robots.txt, firewall and CDN settings and agree the right mix with you.
It does little harm, but none of the major AI search tools has confirmed that it uses the file. We would rather spend your time on crawler access, clear pages and third-party mentions, which do make a difference. If you want an llms.txt file for completeness, we can add one in minutes.
In most cases, yes. Clearer pages, better structure, accurate schema and stronger mentions from other sites are also things Google rewards in normal results. We plan AI SEO alongside your existing SEO so the two support each other rather than compete for budget or attention.
We agree a set of real customer questions, run each one several times on every major AI tool and record whether you are mentioned, cited, how you are described and who else appears. We also track AI referral visits and enquiries in GA4, and branded search trends, so you can see business impact, not just screenshots.
